Symposium Q: Materials Science and Cultural Heritage

Program Program
Abstract Abstract

Materials science and art conservation science are deeply linked. This symposium will present and discuss recent advances in scientific and technical studies in art, archaeology and conservation for the benefit of both scientific communities in order to maintain the cultural heritage. Contributions for this symposium will explore the importance of materials science and analytical techniques in understanding ancient objects and technologies. Materials science and analysis down to the nanometre scale are of particular importance in the field of conservation to study ageing, stabilization and consolidation mechanisms. Other important questions relates to the dating and authentication of art objects, the characterisation of sources of ancient materials and the study of production processes of manufactured goods.

Aim

The aim of this symposium is to identify those topics in art, archaeology and ancient technology that are best for the methodology and techniques of materials science and interdisciplinary expertises, to help answer questions related to ageing, weathering, dating, etc., in order to better understand and preserve cultural heritage.

Topics

• Ancient, historic and modern technologies
• Sources of materials and production processes
• Archaeological science and archaeometry
• Dating and authentication
• Deterioration mechanisms (ageing, weathering, etc.)
• Conservation treatments
