| Fall 12 C: Functional perovskites |
|
The main topic of the symposium concerns the understanding of ABO3 perovskites, which remain among the most challenging topics at the interface between solid state chemistry and solid state physics, both from an academic and application point of view. Scope: Currently, coupling phenomena in multiferroics and new properties at interfaces in perovskite heterostructures attract a great interest. Many of the most interesting physical phenomena as ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity magnetoresistance are directly related to phase transitions in solid states. Also, most of the functional materials used in the electronics and spintronics display specific properties that can be optimized due to the phase transitions which they undergo. Among the studied materials, perovskites are of particular importance, since they exhibit an extraordinary range of crystallographic structures, chemical bonding and physical properties. Although perovskites have been known for a long time, new intriguing physical effects are periodically discovered and their understanding remains an internationally highly competitive area. A considerable amount of current investigations concentrates on multifunctional materials in which several physical properties could potentially be used in applications. One of the key questions for future development and understanding of multifunctional materials concerns mutual coupling between physical properties and mechanisms enabling industrial applications. The aim of the symposium would be to bring together leading, not only European, scientists in the field of perovskite science and to highlight both current research directions and to provide an outlook into future challenges. Hot topics to be covered by the symposium: To the topics that would cover the fields of the E-MRS symposium belong: structural phase transitions, ferroelastics, ferroelectrics, flexoelectricity, magnetoelectric and multiferroic perovskites, lead-free ferroics, strain engineering in thin film perovskites, new phenomena at perovskite interface, perovskite-based devices, advances in ab-initio calculations and advanced structural characterization.
