Photovoltaic Technologies – a European Strength: Challenges for Materials Research

Direct generation of electricity from solar photons into electricity is merging to a major industry, with very fast market increases. Both the performance and costs are largely depending on the materials properties.

This half-day workshop will offer an opportunity on one side to the researchers in the field to get a better knowledge of the needs as expressed by industry and also to industries to get a better information on he research & development activities.

The panelists will consist of Executives from Industry, R&D institutions and Academic Research. The audience will be invited to participate actively to the discussions. The moderator will be Prof. H. Richter (E-MRS)

Introductive remarks for the panel discussion by the following speakers
(each with 20 minutes):

• „Non-classical Semiconductors - European strengths“
Heinz Kundert, President, SEMI Europe, Brussels

• “Polysilicon for high efficient photovoltaics“
Erich Dornberger, Head of Applications Technology, Wacker Chemie AG, Burghausen

• “Improved Process Control and Standardization in photovoltaics”
Werner Bergholz, Jacobs University, Bremen

• “Robust manufacturing for high cell and module efficiency based on crystalline silicon“
Karl Heinz Küsters, Head of Technology, Conergy SolarModule GmbH & Co. KG, Frankfurt (Oder)

• “Road map for thin-film photovoltaics“
Dieter Schmid, CTO Thin-film Division, centrotherm photovoltaics AG, Blaubeuren

• “High volume production of thin-film solar cells“
David Eaglesham, VP Technology, First Solar, Inc., Tempe, Arizona

• “States for the photovoltaics worldwide – Production and market“
Arnulf Jaeger-Waldau, Renewable Energies, European Commission, JRC, Institut for Environment and Sustainability, Ispra
