P: Protective coatings and Thin films’09

pdf Program 2009 P 832.77 Kb

The major aim of this symposium is to offer an overview and a forum for the interchange of information and expertise on the cutting edge research, advanced technology and applications of protective coatings and thin films. Areas of particular interest will include, but will not be limited to, the following topics:

• Materials and nanoscale systems, such as diamond-like carbon, multi-component systems based on transition metal nitrides or oxides, multi-functional nanolaminates or nanostructured coatings with a wide range of applications (automotive, aerospace or machinery industry, medical implants, electronic displays, inkjet printing, decoration, etc…).
• Physical and chemical synthesis, with special emphasis on the emerging advanced processes, such as highly ionized sputter deposition or ion enhanced pulsed laser deposition, activated reactive evaporation, thermal or cold gas spraying, highly conformal cathodic arc, plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition, plasma-based ion implantation and hybrid sputtering/CVD techniques;
• Fundamentals of deposition processes, growth modeling, substrate/surface effects, residual stresses;
• Characterization and properties of protective coatings, including morphology, microstructure, composition, adhesion, mechanical properties such as high strength, superhardness, high ductility, excellent impact resistance, friction, wear and lubrication, multi-functionality for severe tribological environments or dry machining applications, erosion and load-bearing capacity, and chemical properties comprising chemical inertness, UV resistance, anti-smog, anti-microbial or self-cleaning finalities, etc.

We call for papers giving the latest information on research and development in topics corresponding to one or more of the above-mentioned areas. For 2009, particular emphasis will be put on all aspects covering new applications of nanostructured coatings at the crossroads between different technologies and disciplines.

The manuscripts submitted to this symposium and accepted after peer-review processing on the basis of the referee procedure adopted for regular papers will be published in the international scientific journal ‘Surface and Coatings Technology’ by Elsevier. The deadline for on-line manuscript submission on the EES is May 31, 2009.

For this 2009 Symposium, the following hot topics would be particularly highlighted:
1. Innovative deposition processes
2. Advances in thin films characterization techniques using in-situ diagnostics
3. Hard and tough nanostructured coatings: nanocomposites, multilayers and nanolaminates
4. Oxidation/corrosion resistant coatings based on nitrides, carbides or oxides
5. Low-friction and wear resistant carbon-based coatings
6. Innovations in surface treatments for adhesion or mechanical improvement
7. Mechanical Properties: recent progress in nanoindentation and small-scale plasticity
8. Complex coatings for automotive and aerospace applications
9. Advanced coatings for enhanced lifetime and workability of metal forming tools
10. High performance coatings on light-weight and/or transparent substrates
