Events

From a bottom-up perspective the concept of the Forum has been most recently endorsed at the largest meeting of materials scientists in Europe. In parallel, this idea has received strong support at the highest levels from members of the European parliament, Nobel laureates and Government ministers and agencies. These discussions and initiatives have resulted in the proposal of a formal launch of an EUROPEAN MATERIALS FORUM.

Cork - University College - Ireland
Launch meeting - June 28-29, 2004

Cork_June_04The official launch ceremony of the European Materials Forum took place, which was addressed by a representative from the Dutch Ministry for Education, Culture and Science. He endorsed the Forum and its objectives, as presented in the final session.

European Materials Forum

logo_emfThe European Materials Forum (EMF) is an independent and informal organization representing both public and private societies, companies and agencies committed to the scientific and technological development of Materials Science in Europe. EMF provides a common forum to advocate independent scientific advice of materials science in European policy making and to stimulate the involvement of active players from both public and private sectors in the design and implementation materials science and technology policy in Europe.

EMF was initially launched in 2004 when a number of scientific societies and organizations decided to combine their efforts and shared interest in the debate about materials science in Europe and to stimulate the involvement of the scientific community in Europe not only as an active participant in the debate, but also to stimulate strong contacts between research and industry.

Awards

The E-MRS Award program strives to acknowledge outstanding contributors to the progress of materials research, and to recognize their exciting and profound accomplishments.

We seek to honor those whose work has already had a major impact in the field, and those young researchers whose work already leads to great expectations for future leadership.

Graduate Student Award

Student_awards_2009E-MRS Graduate Student Awards are intended to honor and encourage graduate students whose academic achievements and current materials research display a high level of excellence and distinction. E-MRS seeks to recognize students of exceptional ability who show promise for significant future achievement in materials research.

Awards are presented at the Plenary Session during the week of the Spring meeting. The prizes consist of a 450 EUR cash prize accompanied with a diploma.

Czochralski Award

Czochralski_AwardProfessor Jan Czochralski is one of the most famous Polish scientists. One of his most important discoveries was the technology for growing single crystals, now known as the Czochraski Method. It was discovered in 1916 when he found that after dipping a pen into a small crucible of molten aluminium and withdrawing it, a thread of aluminium hangs from the nib. Careful investigations had shown that this was a single crystal and so the Czochralski Method for single crystal growth was born. The method is used for example for the growth of the single crystals of Germanium and Silicon which are the basis of a vast range of modern electronic equipment and devices.

Taking into account the merits of Czochralski for materials science, technology transfer to industry, and international colaboration, E-MRS established an award in the name of Jan Czochralski.

To date five recipients have been honoured:
- Professor Dr Walter HEYWANG, formerly Director of Research of Siemens,
- Professor Dr Boris PATON, the long term President of the Ukraine National Academy of Science,
- Prof. Thaddeus B. MASSALSKI from Carnegie Mellon University,
- Prof. Shuji NAKAMURA from University of California and Prof. Kurt Heinz Juergen BUSCHOW from University of Amsterdam.
- The year 2009 recipient is Prof. Hermann GRIMMEISS from University of Lund.

The European Materials Research Society

ks7824The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS), a non profit scientific association founded in 1983, is focussing on creating the synergy between interdisciplinary, innovative technologies, diffusing and exchanging information and promoting technology transfer from public institutions towards industry. The main objective is to promote and enhance the efficiency of research in European countries in the field of Advanced Materials and to give quick information on the development of science and technology in their area in the rest of the world, through our links with other MRS societies belonging to the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) http://www.iumrs.org
